    1. Quick Write: Symbols of Fear
Today we will read Edgar Allan Poe’s famous story of confinement in an extraordinary prison cell in Toledo, Spain, during the brutal Spanish Inquisition. Poe’s story is powerful for many reasons, one of which is the form of torture that is imposed upon the prisoner (who is also the narrator). This form of torture is so dreadful that it causes the prisoner to cry out at one point, “Any horror but this!” What could this horror be?

      Prompt

What is a fear or phobia of yours? Write what this fear is and then describe some of the different images you associate with it. (These images can be from your dreams, your imagination, from movies or stories, or recollections of your own experiences.)
Optional: If time permits, you can respond to the above prompt a second time for another fear.
